The Portada of Antofagasta

mapa-natural-la portada

This arch, formed by volcanic rock, emerges from the sea and is a natural monument and one of the national symbols of Chile.  It can be seen from the coastal farellón (large cliff), after exiting 25 kilometers to the north of the city.  It is adorned with birds, seagulls, ducks, and pelicans, and occasionally one can spot sea lions and dolphins.
