It was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO and it represents an oasis in the middle of a semiarid zone, for which is became protected by law in the 40’s.  It is a unique ecosystem, isolated since the last ice age, with, thanks to its humid microclimate, has species that currently only exist in regions 1200 kilometers to the south.  In addition to its abundant vegetation, it contains a rich variety of birds and mammals, such as the Colorado Fox.
