These days, nitrate mining is part of the past.  However, it was an important fertilizer during the 19th c. that generated extraordinary export revenue for Chile.  What is unique about the town of Santa Maria is that, unlike other mining towns, it is still alive despite the disappearance of the nitrate mining industry.  The town, which is located close to the Antofagasta, also has an archaeological and history museum.
