La Serena Downtown Historic District

La Serena

The history of La Serena dates back to 1544 and is one of the oldest cities in Chile.  It was originally founded by the Spanish.  Its oldest area was declared a historic district largely because of the historical significance of its architecture.  Points of interest in the area include the cathedral, the lighthouse monument, and many other neoclassical buildings.  The beaches are another strong attraction that draws thousands of visitors every summer.
