Main attractions: In the middle of the arid Atacama Desert, 95 km northeast of Antofagasta, is this former saltpeter office, which was declared a National Monument in 1971 for its enormous heritage value. On the tour you can appreciate the historic legacy of this industrial camp that represents the era of the saltpeter boom, which had a major impact on the national economy in the late 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. It was abandoned as the century wore on and was used as a camp for political prisoners during the military dictatorship. We highlight the urban center with its square, theater, school, and staff housing, in addition to the area of the playing fields and lastly the sector where the saltpeter production process can be seen.
