More than 25,000 people are expected to rock out to music at the Maquinaria Festival 2010 Saturday, Oct. 9. They will be spoilt for choice at the rock mega-show that brings together headline acts such as Yo la Tengo, Pixies, Queens of the Stone Age, Incubus and Linkin Park.

In all, 19 bands will perform over 12 hours, their performances spread over three massive stages at the horse racing track Club Hipico in central Santiago.

Chilean artists such as DJ Bitman are also performing, as are South American musicians such as heavy metal bands Cavalera Conspiracy from Brazil and alternative rockers El Otro Yo from Argentina.

It is also being promoted as an environmentally conscious festival, with the people putting on the event promoting the recycling of the waste created during a big show.

Environmental organizations such as Greenpeace will have stalls at the show to delivering their message in the “Green zone” not far from the stages.

Saturday’s event is the lynch-pin in a weekend of live performances in Santiago. The French electronic band Air performed Thursday Oct. 7 at the Cupula Theatre Cultural Centre.

Incubus, the band from California with multi-platinum record sales to its name, is also putting on a show at the Cupula on Friday Oct. 8 in addition to its appearance at the festival. Incubus will be donating their performance fee from the show at the Cupula, as well as the money they raise through a meet-the-band auction, to the families of the 33 miners trapped in a mine in the north of Chile. In recent days, drilling efforts have moved closer as three engineering teams use three different approaches to reach the men. President Sebastián Piñera has said he hopes the men will be freed by the middle of October.

Meanwhile, rock group Rage Against the Machine will put on a show Monday Oct. 11 at the Bicentennial municipal stadium of La Florida.
