The turquoise waterways, the rolling pampas, the twisting granite turrets of the Paine Massif: these things and more draw thousands of travelers to Parque Nacional Torres del Paine every year. Now, there is a chance this iconic national park could be officially recognised as one of the planet’s most remarkable places.
As part of a competition set up by VirtualTourist (of the Tripadvisor Media Group), Chile’s tourism board has entered Torres del Paine into a contest that seeks to name the 8th Wonder of the World.
VirtualTourist received over 300 destination nominations from tourism boards around the world between March 18 and May 31, 2013. The destinations are now available to be voted for by the general public through September 27, 2013.
“Having been around for 15 years, travelers know VirtualTourist as one of the best travel guide resources on the web. Combined, members and visitors to our site have been to almost every country in the world,” Giampiero Ambrosi, General Manager of VirtualTourist.com, said. “We want to tap into that world knowledge of our members and other site visitors to have them pick the 8th Wonder of the World.”
Torres del Paine
Often cited as the most spectacular park in South America, Torres del Paine recently placed fifth out of 100 in National Geographic’s list of the World’s Most Beautiful Places, saying of the national park:
“No human-made tower has the awe-inspiring grandeur of the vast, soaring granite monoliths at the heart of Torres del Paine. Yet this . . . national park offers far more than skyscraping spires and pinnacles. Trails wend through pine-scented forest, past emerald lakes, and across windswept plains to the fringes of . . . the glaciers of the Southern Patagonia Ice Field.”
