Lollapalooza Chile: a weekend of rock, pop, and festival fun

The international music festival drew tens of thousands of excited fans to Santiago’s Parque O’higgins for two days of nonstop live music.

For the fourth year in a row the international music festival Lollapalooza took over Santiago’s Parque O’Higgins for a weekend packed with live music from local favorites, fresh international stars, and some of the biggest names in rock.

More than eighty thousand music fans flocked to Parque O’Higgins on Saturday, with similar numbers arriving in droves the second day as well. With major international artists headlining this year like Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, the Pixies and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, it is no wonder the throngs of fans were crowding around the main stages.

However, the smaller stages were almost overwhelmed as young stars like Lorde and talented Chilean acts like Francisca Valenzuela filled the secondary venues.

The youngest performer at the festival, Lorde even seemed surprised herself to see so many fans at her show, which took place at the Playstation stage on Sunday afternoon. A crowd that stretched beyond the designated area for the venue began forming before the act scheduled ahead of the 17-year-old New zealand singer had even left the stage.

“There is someone in the crowd has a sign that says ‘Take a selfie with me’,” Lorde said from the stage, “I am sorry but I don’t think that is going to be possible.”

The young pop star then took out her own camera and took a couple shot of the crowd instead.

Always a hit with families, Kidzapalooza once again drew crowds of all ages for its performance by everyone’s favorite Chilean children’s program 31 Minutos. Performing both Saturday and Sunday, the musical puppet program had parents, kids, as well as groups of young adults singing along and laughing at the many-layered comedy that made the show so popular during its television run from 2003-2008.

With two days of sunshine, dozens of top bands, and thousands of excited and enthusiastic fans, Lollapalooza Chile 2014 was an all around great success, and we can’t wait for next year!
