An Experience of a Lifetime: Children Affected by Disaster Travel to the World Cup

The adventure these fortunate children had was captured in a touching video that registers their testimonies about how they endured the catastrophes of last April, at the same time that it accounts for their excitement about the trip: from the moment they left their houses to the moment they embarked on their first plane flight with the presidential convoy.

Constanza, Carla, Rosa, Claudio, Alex and Brian are the six kids that traveled with President Michelle Bachelet to attend the first march that the Chilean football team played against Australia in Cuibabá, at the 2014 World Cup in Brasil. The kids are part of the thousands of victims left by the 8,2 earthquake that hit the north of Chile on April 1st and the fire that struck the port city of Valparaíso a few days later. The group was able to travel with the President thanks to an initiative organized by Fundación Imagen de Chile following the activities that the Chancellor’s Office coordinated to set the presence of Chile in the World Cup.

This opportunity met the objective of representing Chile through kids that personify values such as hope, self-improvement, and strength. “The idea –according to the organizers- was to bring some happiness to these kids”.

The video also records their happy faces as they shouted for every goal of the Chilean team –popularly known as la Roja- in their successful match against Australia, where the national team won 3 to 1 against their opponent.
