The Universidad de Valparaíso is an autonomous higher education institution, created by decree law No. 6 of 12 February 1981. Until that date, it was the Valparaiso Campus of Universidad de Chile. Its origins date back to the year 1911 with the founding of the first law school of Valparaíso. It carries out teaching, research and outreach activities, that fall within the realm of a university’s undertaking; and in accordance with them should adequately cover the interests and needs of the country, preferably those of the Valparaíso Region, at the highest level of excellence. It is a complex and extensive public institution higher education, with its own heritage that is governed by its own bylaws and organic regulations, inspired in the principles of liberty, democracy and pluralism.
The University is organized into 9 faculties: Architecture, Science, Marine Sciences, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Law and Social Sciences, Pharmacy, Humanities, Medicine, and Dentistry that impart 42 Programs. Our graduate and postgraduate programs are aimed at training professionals of the highest academic, scientific and technological conditions required by today’s society. The Universidad de Valparaiso offers 26 Masters and 2 Ph.D. programs, one of them in conjunction with UTFSM.
The Universidad de Valparaiso seeks to promote and support scientific and technological research in all areas of knowledge within the University, and supports their dissemination and transfer of technology to society. It has been awarded important projects especially from Conicyt, Fondecyt, Fondef, Fonis, etc. In addition, it excels in terms of ISI and Scielo publications. Aside from projects awarded by those important funds, the University has won Anillo, PBC & T projects.
