Main attractions: In the heart of the Pampa del Tamarugal, 47 km east of Iquique, Humberstone is another reflection of the once-thriving Chilean saltpeter industry. It was first located there in 1872, when the “La Pampa” office was founded. In 1935 the comfortable facilities that made Santiago Humberstone one of the most emblematic saltpeter enclaves were built. After years of abandon and dismantling, the Saltpeter Museum Corporation conceded the place to the Ministry of National Assets to execute a project to add value and to administer the historic complex.
