The Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN) was founded in 1956 and its history is especially linked to the development of the north of Chile. It has campuses in the cities of Antofagasta and Coquimbo, as well as in San Pedro de Atacama, where the Institute of Archaeological Research and the Gustavo Le Paige museum are located.
The institution is organized into seven faculties, 21 departments and nine schools. It also develops research, training and technical assistance activities through its three institutes and 14 centers. It has an enrollment of more than 9,000 pre-graduate students distributed among the 39 careers. In addition, it offers five doctoral and 23 masters programs at the graduate level.
At present, the UCN develops academic, research, development and innovation projects in conjunction with institutions in Germany, Australia, Belgium, United States, Spain, France and Japan. It also conducts bilateral collaboration efforts in different modalities, such as academic exchange and further training, research stays, as well as the exchange of information, publications and materials.
The university develops multilateral collaboration activities by participating in several international inter-university organizations, as well as engaging in research networks, academic and student mobility programs in countries of Europe, North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Oceania. It gives special attention to the neighboring countries through collaboration with institutions of Argentina, Bolivia and Peru.
The UCN has also established bilateral and multilateral agreements with institutions in Germany, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, China, United States, Spain, France, Honduras, Switzerland, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Paraguay and Uruguay. In addition, it implements specific agreements for international and domestic student exchange.
