Chilean rapper/songstress Ana Tijoux is drawing considerable attention at the 13th edition Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) in New York City.
The event brings the best and boldest new Latin acts from all over Latin America, Spain and the United States to the Big Apple July 11th-14th. This year’s edition includes not only Chile’s Tijoux and Puerto Rico’s legendary Calle 13, but also electronica from Mexico, punk from Venezuela and hip-hop from California, to name just a few of the alternatives.
Writer Jim Farber from The New York Daily News, however, pays special attention to Chile's Tijoux, touting her as a singer/rapper “that you dare not miss.”
“Singer-rappers seldom do both sides of their hyphen justice,” writes Farber. “Not so for Chile’s Ana Tijoux. She has a voice that’s admirably fluid and a rapping style of genuine force. Her second U.S. CD, ‘La Bala,’ finds her spewing agile rhymes, or singing in a rapturous haze, over live string and horn arrangements that make her music uncommonly rich.”
Farber also commented that Tijoux has plenty to rap about, as she spent her childhood in France away from Chile.
“The family returned when Tijoux was a teen. Though she first rapped in French, she eventually battled her way to the front of Santiago’s hip-hop scene. Tijoux’s Spanish releases have made her one of her country’s hippest exports.”
Touted as a conference promoting “Rock, Hip-Hop, Electronica, Punk, Funk and everything in between,” the LAMC is the only major conference geared towards the marketing of Spanish-language alternative music. The five-day event provides networking opportunities with the genre’s leading artists, label executives, journalists, managers, retailers and programmers, and is the most extensive gathering of Latin Americans in alternative entertainment to be offered by a music conference to date.
