Four Chilean universities were listed among the top 10 in Latin America by British educational specialists, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), in their second annual rankings.
The report described Chile as having the “most eye-catching progress” of any country in the 2012 QS Latin America University Rankings, with the Universidad Católica and the Universidad de Chile maintaining their positions at number two and four on the list, while the Universidad de Concepción jumped three places to ninth position and the Universidad de Santiago jumped eleven places to tenth.
With the entrance of the two Chilean newcomers, Chile claimed the most amount of universities in the top ten, while Brazil scored three, Mexico two, and Colombia had one university among the most highly ranked.
The rankings were based upon these categories: academic reputation, employmer reputation, faculty student ratio, faculty members with PhD’s, citations per paper and web impact - and although the report outlined areas of improvement in the Chilean higher education system, it was glowing in its overall assessment.
“Whereas accessibility clearly remains a major issue, in terms of research performance, Chile’s universities are among the best in the continent,” the QS report says.
Three Chilean universities made the top 15 for published papers per faculty, led by the Universidad de Chile at six on the list, while Universidad Católica made the top 20 for both citations per paper and papers published per faculty, a feat that was replicated only by one other university.
“Therefore, in terms of research quantity combined with impact, they [Chilean universities] can lay a credible claim to be Latin America’s foremost research institutions,” the report says.
