The best of Chile’s independent music scene united over the weekend for Festival Neutral 2013, a fun evening of live entertainment on four stages at Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (Centro GAM) in downtown Santiago.
Centro GAM’s various spaces formed the perfect venue for this eclectic event. The building’s main outdoor space, the Plaza Central, transformed into a dance floor for a freestyle hip hop dance group, and the Puma Lab became a special kids space with shows aimed at a younger audience. Two of Centro GAM’s theaters were utilized for acoustic performances, and a main stage was constructed outside in Centro GAM’s Plaza Zócalo for the pop and rock artists.
The star attraction of Festival Neutral 2013 was the first-ever live performance from pop duo Alex & Daniel, who released their self-titled first album on February 25, 2013. Alex & Daniel is comprised of Alex Anwandter and Gepe, two of Chile’s most popular musicians.
The new duo did not disappoint with their performance, kicking off the show with their hit single, Mundo Real (Real World). Their set continued with not only Alex & Daniel songs, but also popular songs from each of the musician’s personal albums. Even when the power cut out during Antwandter’s smash hit ¿Cómo Puedes Vivir Contigo Mismo? (How Can You Live With Yourself), the pair remained professional and returned to the stage after the mishap with even more energy than before.
In addition to Alex & Daniel, Chilean bands Protistas, Pedropiedra, and Ases Falsos rocked the main stage. Each delivered a high-energy performance that had the crowd dancing and singing along to the lyrics.
For Álvaro Solar, vocalist for Protistas, Festival Neutral 2013 was a great chance to bring the best of Chilean independent music to a live audience.
"Neutral for us is a tremendous way to start the year, and for all, it’s a tremendous opportunity to enjoy what is happening with Chilean music today," said Solar.
