Wayne Bernhardson has dedicated over twenty years to the exploration of Chile and Argentina, writing for Lonely Planet and Moon Travel guidebooks. Now, Bernhardson has gone digital with the development of Chile Travel Adventures, a mobile app available for iPhone, iPad and Android.

“I like to think that, in its depth, it's a reflection of nearly 25 years experience in and with the country, and the fact that I visit Chile every year, usually for months at a time,” Bernhardson said.

Bernhardson was considering expanding his digital coverage from his existing travel app for Argentina when Sutro Media approached him about creating one for Chile. Seasoned travel app creators, Sutro Media, released Chile Travel Adventures in late 2012.

“I am still dedicated to print guidebooks, such as my Moon Handbooks to Chile and Patagonia, but I do like the fact that it's easier to correct mistakes in a digital format, and to add new information almost as soon as it becomes available,” Bernhardson said.

The application itself is robust; the user can browse 19 topics, including art & culture, festivals, history, nightlife and practical information, and then sort item results by name, distance, cost and city. In addition to standard restaurant and hotel entries, users can search the Art & Culture category for subjects like religion in Chile, or the Practical Info category for a detailed map of the Santiago metro system.

Bernhardson’s extensive familiarity with Chile provides a fresh perspective and demonstrates his continued intrigue in what the country has to offer, from traditional tourist destinations to the capital city of Santiago.

“What’s not spoken about enough though is how great Santiago is. A lot of travelers merely move through it and they are missing a lot. It has experienced such a renaissance in recent years; it’s lively and entertaining, and great for excursions,” Bernhardson told Chile.Travel. “I can’t think of many cities in the world where you can go skiing and surfing from in the same day.”

Purchase Chile Travel Adventures for US$ 2.99 (CLP 1,400) in both the Apple App Store and Google Play.
