Some of the best bands from Chile and rest of the world are heading to Santiago for another installment of the Andean country’s biggest music festival, Lollapalooza. Announced at midnight on November 4 with great aplomb, the 2014 lineup did not disappoint the high standards set by previous years.
Seemingly anticipating the high expectations, organizers pulled out all the stops securing major homegrown talents such as Francisca Valenzuela, Ana Tijoux, Nano Stern and Inti Illimani as well as other internationally acclaimed bands from across the globe. Headline acts include Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Pixies, Nine Inch Nails and Imagine Dragons.
Traditionally rock-dominated, Lollapalooza has stayed true to form with big-name bands, but this year the Santiago festival has paid special attention to other genres, creating an unprecedented eclectic lineup for 2014. Alongside the rockers, the Santiago stages will host DJs Flux Pavilion and Axwell as well as U.S. rapper Kid Cudi.
The story of Chile’s biggest festival began thousands of miles away and two decades ago as an ambitious idea of legendary rock group Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell. Conceived as a farewell tour for the band in 1991 before they broke up, the festival toured the US, treating fans to performances from acts as diverse as Siouxsie and the Banshees and Ice-T.
Today, the tour concept lives on with the Chilean festival headliners continuing the party in Brazil and, for the first time, Argentina. Chile, however, was where it all began for the Latin American leg of this legendary festival.
The festival is set to take over Santiago’s Parque O’Higgins on March 29-30. For the full lineup checkout the Lollapalooza Chile site. Tickets are available online via Puntoticket.
