Once a year the Chile’s beautiful seaside city of Viña del Mar, located in the Valparaíso Region, welcomes famous musicians the world over to bestow their talents upon expectant crowds for the Festival de Viña del Mar. Huge names such as Elton John, Sting, Bryan Adams, Nelly Furtado and Shakira have previously graced its stages.

2014 is no different. From Feb.23 - 28, legends of the game including veteran crooner Rod Stewart, Mexican pop sensation Alejandro Fernández (“El Potrillo”) and Puerto Rican Grammy Award winning producer, singer and songwriter Tommy Torres will be thrilling audiences.

As always, a strong showing of talented performers will represent Chile. This year, orchestra Sonora Palacios —“the founders of Chilean cumbia” — are scheduled to strut their stuff on Thursday, Feb. 27.

Also flying the flag for Chile will be Gepe (Daniel Riveros), who has been described as the “new guru of Chilean folk.” He is known for his lively fusions of 1960-70 folk and minimalist electropop.

Puerto Rican Ricky Martin will be making another appearance after lighting up the stage last year. The “Livin’ La Vida Loca” star has sold over 70 million albums worldwide, boasts 95 platinum records, 11 number one hit songs, six Grammys and has performed in over 60 countries across the globe. Martin is set to open the event on Sunday.

The festival also includes stand-up comedy acts and crowd participation competitions. Comedians Jorge Alís and Gigi Martin have recently been confirmed for the festival — Argentine Alís is well known in Chile for his television work, such as “Mentiras verdaderas”, "Infieles" y “Teatro en Chilevisión” — this will be his Festival de Viña del Mar debut.

Viña del Mar’s Mayor, Virginia Reginato, has excitedly announced a number of acts through her Twitter account.

“Friends, it is a great pleasure to confirm Alejandro Fernandez @alexoficial for the Viña del Mar Festival 2014,” she wrote Jan. 17.

The big event will take place at the amphitheatre at Parque Quinta Vergara from February 23 - 28, 2014.
