This won’t be the first visit to Chile for thrash metal band Slayer, but it is likely to be their most exciting yet. The fourth major concert performed by the band in Chile will also be the forum for the band’s singer and bassist, Tom Araya, to be granted the keys to the city of Viña del Mar, where he was born in 1961. The concert in Chile’s favorite beach resort, held as a celebration of Araya’s birthday, will also be the band’s first-ever performance in Chile’s Region V.

Fans of the band have already snatched up most of the tickets, claiming 80 percent of those available for the June 2 performance in Santiago’s Movistar Arena – one of the major venues for Chile’s Lollapalooza in April – and as many as 90 percent of the tickets for the concert at the Polideportivo in Viña del Mar on June 3.  The band’s last trip to Chile came in 2006 while touring with Christ Illusion, the album that won them two Grammy’s. This visit to Chile comes as part of the World Painted Blood Tour, celebrating thirty years of music.

“I asked especially to play in Viña del Mar. It will be really emotional to play where I was born. For my 11th wedding anniversary my wife and I had tattoos done in Viña. It was the first time I was here with my family,” Araya told Chilean daily El Mercurio. Though born on Chile’s pacific coast, Araya left the country of his birth with his parents at the age of five for the United States.

“My father contributed to the formation of the city, to develop it, and helped many people to build their homes. My sister grew up with many friends in Viña,” Araya told the website Rockaxis.

In the thirty years since its formation, Slayer has produced 11 albums with Araya as vocalist and bassist. Along with Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax, the band is considered one of the top proponents of the thrash metal genre.
