It has assumed a nonpermanent seat in the Security Council of the United Nations for two years starting January 2014. It previously served in this role between 1996-1997 and 2003-2004 and also from 1952-1953 and 1961-1962. Chile is an active member of organizations like the United Nations, serving as a member of the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights and has participated in peacekeeping missions, deploying diverse military groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Cyprus, El Salvador, Haiti, Inida-Pakistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Kosovo, Libya, the Middle East, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and East Timor.
The country is an associated member of Mercosur and the Andean Community of Nations and a full member of APEC. Moreover, Chile has been a full member of the OECD since 2010. Chile has been an important actor in international economics and free trade in the hemisphere.
