Unravel the essence of Valparaíso: five tastes of city life

Getting to know Chile’s beloved port city – and for many, its cultural heart – just got easier.  Five new cultural routes set up by tourism agency Vivetour give visitors the chance to get closer to the day to day life of Chile’s quirkiest, most colorful city.

Explore Cerro Concepción with its panoramic views of Valparaíso; ride on the antique funicular down to Plaza Victoria; stop for a typical snack of ‘tostadas con palta’ (avocado on toast): this is Essential Valparaíso, one of five new tours set up to show visitors the real essence of life in Chile’s beloved port city.

“The idea is to bring tourists closer to locals, because it’s the locals who make Valparaíso what it is,” Miguel Nahuel, director of Vivetour, told Chilean newspaper La Tercera.

Set up in 2010 with the support of the Chilean Economic Development Agency (Corfo), the five tours are specially designed to show visitors how Valparaíso locals live: “what they do, where they shop, what they eat,” explains Nahuel. Highlights range from watching fisherman haul in their catches in El Membrillo cove to sketching in the fine houses of Cerro Santo Domingo.

February will see the launch of a new tour especially for young travelers and night owls, ‘Valparaíso at Night’, designed to show off the city’s renowned nightlife.

Guided by popular folk singer and local celebrity Dióscoro Rojas, the tour will take visitors to Bar Liberty, one of the oldest nightspots in Valparaíso, and then on to Bar La Playa for a local cocktail-making demonstration.  After sampling fish delicacies at Restaurant Victoria the tour ends with a cueca class (Chile’s traditional folklore dance), at folk hotspot Rincon de las Guitarras (Guitar Corner).

The Vivetour outings last from three to six hours, accompanied by English- and German-speaking guides, with prices ranging from CP$8,000 – CP$50,000 (approximately US$16 – US$100).
