Chilean audiences will get the chance to see one of the most innovative groups in North American contemporary dance in May-June next year, as company ContraTiempo is set to fly south and hit stages in South America.
A cross cultural program, DanceMotion USA is a collaboration between the revered Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural affairs.
“DanceMotion USA has provided us with the opportunity to broaden our institutional mission and to share American dance with global audiences,” BAM executive producer Joseph V. Melillo said in a statement. “This resonant cultural exchange program has been a successful and rewarding endeavor in its first three years.”
Since the program’s launch in 2010, eleven U.S. dance companies have toured to seven different regions around the globe, including Sub-Saharan and Northern Africa, South America, the Middle East, the Iberian Peninsula, Eurasia, and Central, South and Southeast Asia. DanceMotion USA will be bringing Contra-Tiempo to Chile for the first time.
Created by award-winning dancer and choreographer Ana Maria Alvarez, Contra-Tiempo is a non-profit, Los Angeles based, activist dance company, dedicated to “transforming the world through dance.”
Through the fusion of Salsa, Afro-Cuban, contemporary urban and abstract dance theater, this unique urban Latin dance theater brings to life voices that are not traditionally heard on the concert stage. The group has toured internationally to Cuba and has travelled the U.S. extensively.
DanceMotion USA is just one of several exchange initiatives between the U.S. and Chile over a range of fields in recent times. In conservation, U.S. based program Ríos to Rivers brought a select group of teenagers to Chile to learn about the country’s magnificent rivers this year in an effort to raise awareness for river conservation. In business, U.S. based Rotary International Group brought young U.S. professionals to Chile in 2010 to improve knowledge of the country’s culture and businesses.
