How can I save energy and protect the world we live in? This is just one of the many questions that are answered by a new educational initiative that is reaching 50,000 children and young people across the country’s capital this year alone.
Launched in 2011, the “Save the earth: the solution is you” project uses videos, competitions, motivational talks and workshops to teach children how to care for their habitat and conserve resources through recycling and other easy to make changes.
Created by the Neurona Group, an audio visual company specializing in science and environmental issues, the campaign is funded by the Environment Ministry and several private companies.
Ricardo Irarrázaval, deputy secretary of the Ministry of Environment, emphasized the importance of awareness campaigns such as this in creating a green thinking country. “To have an [eco-friendly culture], one of the first steps is to educate families, who are the base of society and where we want to concentrate our efforts because that’s the campaign’s strength,” Irarrázaval told Infosurhoy.
Piloted in the República de México school in Santiago, the program has received glowing feedback from schoolchildren. “Now, we know how to take care of plants and make them grow,” Henry Cantos, an eighth grader, told Infosurhoy. “We also learned a lot of products we throw away can be recycled to make ornaments, for example.”
Following its success in the capital, the campaign will now tour across Chile in cities including La Serena, Viña del Mar and Concepción reaching an estimated 100,000 people in 2013.
“Save the earth: The solution is you” is not the only project increasing awareness on environmental issues in Chile. Of a similar ilk is the recent Ecobus project which — running on vegetable oil — tours the country bringing fun activities that teach children about the environment to schools across the country.
