Chile launches campaign to express thanks for international aid

The Fundación Imagen de Chile led an initiative to thank the world for its cooperation and solidarity.


Over the weekend, a message of thanks to other countries for the assistance provided to the victims of the recent earthquake in Chile was published in full-page ads taken out in diverse media outlets in Latin America and the United States.

The Fundación Imagen de Chlie launched the campaign, entitled “Thanks,” which has a presence in international media outlets like the Folha de Sao Paulo and O Globo in Brazil; La Razón and El Deber in Bolivia; La Nación and Clarín in Argentina; El País, Uruguay; El Comercio, Peru; El Comercio, Ecuador; El Nacional and El Universal in Venezuela; El Tiempo in Colombia; El Universal and Reforma in Mexico; El Nuevo Herald and The Miami Herald, USA.

The campaign also includes a spot on the news network CNN en Español, while publication in other global media outlets is being considered.

The initiative is aimed at forging even closer ties of commitment and solidarity than those Chile already enjoys with its neighbors and the rest of the world. “With this campaign we want to thank our Latin American friends and those from around the world for the enormous effort they have made to help rebuild our devastated country. We want to express our heartfelt thanks to all countries and international institutions that have joined forces for us,” said Juan Gabriel Valdés, executive director of Fundación Imagen de Chile, the driving force behind the campaign.

So far, the countries that have helped Chile are: Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, South Korea, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Spain, USA, France, Finland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, United Kingdom, Russia, Sweden, Thailand, Uruguay and Venezuela. The country has also received the cooperation of institutions like the UN, the Italian Episcopal Conference, the European Union and the OAS.

The priorities are health and humanitarian and technical assistance

In terms of health support, Europe and Latin America have taken the lead. Argentina, Australia, Colombia, Cuba, Israel, Italy, Peru and Sweden sent field hospitals and doctors. For its part, France also sent medicines and Spain supplied a hospital ambulance and a contingent of firefighters, doctors, nurses and paramedics. Paraguay and the Flemish Government in Belgium sent doctors.

Neighboring countries stood out for their solidarity in terms of humanitarian assistance. The Argentine provinces of San Luis, Mendoza and Neuquén donated nonperishable foodstuffs, tents, beds, blankets and field mess halls, while Bolivia provided 40,000 liters of water and promised another 80,000. Meanwhile, Venezuela sent water and food.

The northern hemisphere did not fail to join in. The United States sent 90,000 combat rations, two Hercules C-130 planes with water and nonperishable foodstuffs and 25 satellite telephones. Meanwhile, Canada cooperated with US$ 2 million and Mexico sent three tons of aid.

In Europe, the Russians donated 100 winter tents with a capacity of 10-12 people and 2,000 blankets, the Swedes sent 500 family tents and portable kitchen-mess halls for 150 people. South Korea provided tents and the United Nations 120 tons of energy bars.

With regard to technical assistance, Germany, Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain France, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, Switzerland, USA and Uruguay sent teams of disaster and telecommunications experts. South Korea, Mexico, Sweden, Uruguay, and the United nations cooperated with water treatment and the United States lent planes for airlifts.

The country also expressed its thanks for the visits by Peruvian President Alan García and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in addition to international authorities like US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.
