Condé Nast Traveller, the prestigious tourism magazine, classified Chile as the fifth best tourist destination of 2009.  The list, which is headed by Amsterdam, followed by Botswana, Brittany and the city of Chicago, is a selection of 20 must-visit destinations or the world’s «top trips».

«Chileans combine the moderation of North Europeans with the warmth and cordiality of Latin Americans,” the magazine emphasized. It described San Pedro Atacama as «a mesmerizing destination, the closest one can come to walking on the Moon,» and Patagonia and Torres del Paine as «beauty that takes your breath away.»

Chile was one of the few South American destinations considered in the ranking. Uruguay was another and obtained 16th place.

Condé Nast Traveller has specialized in luxury and business tourism since 1987. It usually also reviews the world’s best hotels, airlines, products and services. In the 2008 it chose Patagonia’s Hotel Explora as the «best in the Americas and the Caribbean.»
