Chile receives international solidarity and assistance after earthquake

The Chilean Government has requested humanitarian assistance from the United Nations and diverse institutions and people have spontaneously cooperated with the victims of the catastrophe.

International solidarity
President Michelle Bachelet visited different spots hit by the quake.

The earthquake that shook Chile in the early hours of Saturday morning immediately aroused spontaneous offers of assistance and solidarity from other countries and people from around the world.

This morning the Chilean Government also made an official request for humanitarian aid from the United Nations (UN). The international institution communicated via Spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs that it is “ready to take action” and that it will speed up efforts to send aid.

From the outset, President Michelle Bachelet thanked the world for its concern over the natural disaster. “At such dramatic times we once again feel the support of the international community. Yesterday it was up to us to go in support of Haiti and in the same way we are receiving that same solidarity today,” she said.

The assistance requested consists in campaign hospitals, temporary bridges, telecommunications systems, electricity generators, water purifiers, and help in the form of rescue crews and experts in the evaluation of structural damages.
