Chile to launch a satellite that will benefit its small and medium-sized enterprises (Pymes)

The launching into orbit of the SSOT will especially benefit the agricultural and mining sectors, improving the quality of the available information.

In mid 2010 Chile will launch a satellite into space that will make it possible to obtain high-resolution images of the territory and its natural resources, for the use of the community and private companies, especially those of the agricultural sector.

This was reported by Rodrigo Álvarez, director of the Natural Resources Information Center (CIREN – Centro de Información de Recursos Naturales), who indicated that this technology will directly benefit the small and medium-sized enterprises.

“This will be a great asset to the agricultural regions, because the technology will provide access to information that will enable them to make better decisions in terms of the use of soils, climate, characteristics of rural properties, fruit crop records, native forests, roads, hydrography and much more”, commented Álvarez.

Another of the missions of the satellite, known as SSOT (Sistema Satelital de Observación Terrestre – Earth Observation Satellite System), will be to enable more precise predictions to be made of future crops and better monitoring and follow-up of forestry resources, in particular with regard to high-value native species such as alerce (larch – Fitzroya cupressoides)and araucaria (monkey puzzle tree – Araucaria sp.).

The mining sector will also benefit directly from the launching of the satellite. The mining authority of the Region of Antofagasta, Germán Novoa, is very enthusiastic about the project. “It will provide support to all our prospections and will improve our geological and topographical knowledge”, he stated.

At present, the National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin – Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería) has available approximately 30% of the country’s geological map, and this percentage will increase once the satellite is launched into orbit in mid-2010.
