After setting social media networks abuzz in Chile and abroad in February, the 5-minute film “A Story for Tomorrow” caught the eye of Vimeo, the popular online video service, in its annual Festival + Awards.
The soul-soaring footage of Dana Saint’s journey through Chile is up for an award in the “Lyrical” category – and the first round of online voting begins now.
“Lyrical” is one of four new categories this year in a total field of 13 categories, including everything from “Fashion” and “Advertising” films to “Animation” and “Motion Graphics.”
Vimeo defined the “Lyrical” category as “a video that showcases the natural world or personal experience using a distinct creative style,” making use of techniques like time-lapse and travel footage.
“We are looking for a fresh perspective that offers new ways of looking at the world around us,” judges say.
But before the films go up before the judges, there is a round of community voting when anyone can vote for their favorite video of each category.
“A Story for Tomorrow” finds itself up against 11 other videos from all over the world, including tilt-shift footage of Rio de Janeiro, time-lapse scenes of Los Angeles city lights and rapid-fire shots of traveling in Vietnam.
“I am extremely excited that ‘A Story for Tomorrow’ has been selected for the Vimeo Festival + Awards,” said Dana Saint in an interview today with This is Chile. “I never expected that a personal travel video would get such amazing feedback, and end up in a festival next to some of my favorite, most respected videos online.”
“I definitely want to thank the people of Chile for their beautiful country, and for all of their support and unbelievably kind words. Their response has made me want to keep traveling, and keep making videos…so thank you all very much,» added the filmmaker from Gnarly Bay Productions.
After the community voting round closes April 28, the finalists will be appraised by a panel of judges, competing for a US$5,000 grant in every category and a US$25,000 grand prize.
The award ceremony will take place on June 7, 2012 in New York City. Hope to see Dana Saint and Gnarly Bay Productions there!
Vote here before April 28, 2012. To vote, you need to create a Vimeo log-in – it’s free – and you can vote once a day in every category.
