To cap off a big year of celebrations in honor of its 70th anniversary, the Symphony Orchestra of Chile will set off on a national tour in December with a special emphasis on home grown music.
The series of free concerts will include educational sessions and open performances for the general public.
Led by acclaimed conductor David del Pino Klinge, the orchestra will visit La Unión, Osorno, Puerto Montt, Temuco, La Serena and Coquimbo before returning to Santiago for a free grand finale at the Quinta Normal Metro station.
The diverse concert program will feature iconic pieces from noted Chilean composers, such as Enrique Soro’s Danza Fantástica and Jorge Urrutia Blondel’s Pastoral de Alhué, along with pieces from world-renowned composers like Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A major.
The orchestra will also play Rimsky-Korsakov’s Spanish Caprice and selected movements from Aram Khachaturian’s ballet, Gayaneh.
“We are very happy because it means we are finishing off this 70th anniversary year by celebrating with regional audiences who don’t normally have the opportunity to hear us,” orchestra concert master Alberto Dourthé said in a statement.
Organized by the Universidad de Chile’s Cultural and Artistic Extension Center (CEAC), the tour has received funding from the Education Ministry’s Institutional Development Fund (MINEDUC) and the municipalities that will host the events.
“In recent years, our orchestra has expanded its repertoire with a focus on promoting [Chilean] composers and developing new audiences,” said CEAC Director Ernesto Ottone Ramirez.
“For this anniversary year, the orchestra has renewed its commitment to our public service calling by equitably spreading musical education to the regions.”
