Chilean wins silver medal in sailing race in The Netherlands

This historic result allows the Chilean sportsman to advance to third place in the World Sailing Cup.


Chilean Matías Del Solar had a historic participation in European waters after finishing in second place and winning the silver medal at the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik, The Netherlands.

This marks the best performance the South American sportsman has achieved in the Old Continent, after finishing second in the competition in which 97 helmsmen participated in the Olympic Laser category. This comprised 10 regattas, in which Del Solar accumulated 70 negative points, ending up behind the British competitor, Tom Slingsby. The Spaniard Javier Hernández came in third.

With his excellent performance in Dutch waters, the Olympic has gained 52 points in the ranking, advancing to third place in the World Sailing Cup. In the World Laser ranking, which includes all Laser trials, he remains in fourth place.

The Chilean was also the best South American helmsman in the competition, outperforming Argentinian Julio Alsogaray (6th) and Brazilian Bruno Fontes (8th).

The next meet in which Del Solar will participate will be held between June 19 and 26 in Kiel, Germany, where the Kieler Woche Regatta will take place.
