Chileans prepare help for people affected by the earthquake

A 24-hour televised campaign that will be held this Friday, in addition to other mass celebrations, are among the solidary events that are being prepared to rebuild the country.

The earthquake that Chile suffered early Saturday morning prompted reactions from all over the world, especially among those compatriots who were not seriously affected.

A series of solidary events are being organized in Santiago with the fundamental goal of rebuilding the country.

The government and the Fundación Teletón – which runs Chile’s largest charity campaign, for disabled children – are organizing the crusade “Chile helps Chile” to be able to build 30,000 emergency shelters and buy supplies, clothing and medicines.

The initiative, which will be broadcast on all of the country’s open television stations, is being led by the well-known Chilean TV presenter Mario Kreutzberger (Don Francisco) and has convened numerous national and international artists, including Miguel Bosé, Alejandro Sanz and Laura Pausini, Shakira, Tito “El Bambino” and Luis Fonsi, in addition to a long-distance performance by the Colombian singer Juanes, who will record a song.

Likewise, the Guatemalan singer Ricardo Arjona, who had to suspend a concert he had planned for 27 February, said in a letter that he wants to reprogram the show in benefit of the victims.

Another benefit activity is the concert “Music shows solidarity with Chile,” which will donate takings to benefit victims. The event will include two important local hip hop bands: Tiro de Gracia and Funkattack. The event will be held on 5 March at 23:00 at the Centro Cultural Amanda.

Days before the earthquake the Chilean composers Nano Stern and Chinoy had been working on organizing a concert planned for 19 March in the Teatro Oriente. According to the producer in charge, they are now evaluating the possibility of reprogramming it to benefit the victims. More information in Facebook.
