Chile’s Juan Yarur unveils incredible art collection to public

The country’s youngest major art collector has put his life’s work on show in the capital, including pieces by Andy Warhol, Tracy Emin, and Damien Hirst.

In just ten years, 29-year-old Juan Yarur has amassed a collection of more than 80 works from some of the biggest figures in modern art in both Chile and beyond.

Yet for the young Chilean, the exhibition on display through end September at Santiago’s Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC) is more of a visual autobiography than a who’s-who of contemporary art.

«Beyond looking at names, I sought the things I related to, this is like my story, somehow,” Yarur says. “It’s an honor to share the works I have been gathering over the years in an important place for Chilean art

The exhibition boasts several pieces from world-renowned artist Damien Hirst, including some of the beautiful gold-gilded butterfly prints from his “Souls” series. A neon sculpture by provocative artist Tracey Emin sits on the second floor, as does one of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe portraits — the first piece procured by Yarur when he was just 19.

As well as these international modern-art heavyweights, the collection contains works by some of the most influential Chilean artists over the last 20 years.

According to MAC Director Francisco Brugnoli, the exhibition aims to encourage and raise awareness of art collecting in Chile, as well as promote the country’s artists.

«The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo presents this as an opportunity to discuss and reflect on the cultural significance of both public and private collectors in our country,» Brugnoli said.

The work of award winning Chilean photographer Paz Errázuriz can be found on the second floor. One of the most respected figures in Chilean black and white photography, portraits in  Errázuriz’s “Boxers” series sit next to a work entitled “Manzana de Adán” (Adam’s Apple) in which the photographer imaged the everyday life of a drag-queen.

Along with Errázuriz, the collections boast the work of 11 other Chilean contemporary artists — from the work of printmaker and sculptor Tomás Rivas, to the harrowing photographic installations of Nicolás Franco.

Yarur’s collection is on display at MAC’s Parque Forestal branch, next to Metro Bellas Artes, through Sep. 29. Entrance is CLP 600 and free on Sundays.
