Santiago buzzed with entrepreneurial energy on Thursday, November 29, thanks to the kick-off of two major start-up focused events: Start-Up Chile Week and Common Pitch Chile.
Common Pitch, a social entrepreneurship event made its Latin American debut on November 29 and will run through to December 1 in Santiago. The three-day event features start-up focused speakers and workshops, and concludes with an on-stage pitch competition between eight start-ups with US$35,000 (CLP$16.8 million) in prize money on the line.
Thursday featured a Common Pitch Chile outdoor festival in Santiago’s Parque Bicentenario. Al Gore, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and 45th United States Vice President, keynoted the event, speaking about sustainable capitalism and social entrepreneurship.
Start-Up Chile’s Start-Up Week (SUP Week) was coordinated in conjunction with Common Pitch Chile and featured a series of activities and talks for everyone in Santiago’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Thursday was a jam-packed day that kicked off with Start-Up Chile’s third Demo Day, an event that gave 20 start-ups three minutes on-stage to pitch their products to national and international investors. The products were diverse – from online food delivery websites to medical tool sterilization systems for the developing world – but all had the common goal of using technology to tap into new commercial markets.
Later in the afternoon, Start-Up Chile formally announced the 105 selected start-ups for its much anticipated sixth round of funding. This sixth round includes companies from 31 countries, with 24 percent from the United States, 19 percent from Chile, 9 percent from Argentina and 7 percent from India. Over 1,400 applications were received for the coveted positions in the program.
According to Horacio Melo, Start-Up Chile´s Executive Director, this new class marks a milestone in the Start-Up Chile program.
<«By selecting these 105 startups we are achieving one of our biggest dreams: when these entrepreneurs arrive in Chile we will have had more than 1,000 global entrepreneurs from more than 36 countries. They have contributed to transform our country into the leading
innovation hub of Latin America,” Melo said in a statement.
