You could be forgiven for thinking that September in Chile is all about eating empanadas, dancing cueca and celebrating Chilean Independence Day. But while all the above is definitely high on everyone’s agenda, one campaign will be dedicating this month and the rest of the year to something equally important – saving the Earth.
Salva la Tierra: Ecocultura en tu Comuna (“Save the Earth: Eco-culture in your Community”) is the name of the project traveling through 25 municipalities in Santiago to raise awareness of the importance of environmental conservation, and to empower young people with the tools to make their lives and households greener.
The tour is the latest branch of the Salva la Tierra that began in April 2011 with a public information campaign and expanded into a region-wide tour of schools a year later.
The program provides students with tips to make their households more environmentally friendly, focusing specifically on reducing electronic waste, cutting back on household water usage by taking shorter showers and fixing leaking taps, changing lighting to more efficient technology, reusing paper, using public transport, bicycles or car pooling, and on recycling household waste.
The campaign – created by the Neurona Group in collaboration with Fundación Terram – aims to educate young people on the big environmental problems facing the planet.
“We want to contribute to this mission and raise environmental awareness in Chile, through its children,” said Cristián Campos, co-creator of the project and director of the Neurona Group.
It also counts on the support of the national environment ministry as well as various regional government bodies.
“The Regional Government is always concerned with the sustainable development of the region and has given its support to this project of continuing education in the 25 municipalities, a project that teaches, motivates and induces young people to be environmentally responsible,” said Regional Minister of Health and the Environment Félix Viveros.
