International bouldering competition heads to Chile!

The North Face Master of Bouldering event will feature dozens of the world’s best climbers at a free festival March 15 and 16 in Parque Bicentenario.

Over 100 of the world’s best boulderers are descending on Chile’s capital this week for the 6th annual The North Face Master of Bouldering climbing competition.

Regarded as South America’s most important climbing event, The North Face Master of Bouldering competition will take place March 15 and 16 in Parque Bicentenario in Santiago near the Perez Zujovic roundabout. Over 3,000 spectators are expected to attend the free event, which will also feature climbing walls for kids, slackline clinics, and other fun activities for all age groups.

Bouldering is special type of rock climbing that is executed without ropes and above padded mats to prevent injury. While traditional rock climbing is typically more endurance based, bouldering relies on quick bursts of energy and a more puzzle-solving format.

The North Face Master of Bouldering competition will take place on a 6 meter (18 feet) tall climbing wall, and climbers will be competing for cash prizes and gear from The North Face.

Athletes putting their skills to the test at the event include three-time world champion Daniel Woods of the United States and Jacopo Larcher of Italy, who at just 19 years old has proven to be one of the world’s best climbers. Top Chilean competitor Lucas Gaona will also be looking to win big on his home turf.

The key female competitor to watch is Alex Johnson of the United States, who comes to Santiago seeking revenge after being defeated last year by 22 year old Soho Langbehn of Chile.

It’s no surprise that the Master of Bouldering competition is returning to Chile for its sixth year; bouldering has been steadily gaining popularity in the Andean nation. In addition to its status as the training ground of star climbers Gaona and Langbehn, Chile is known for offering a variety of bouldering sites with varying levels of difficulty, as well as regular opportunities for competition.
