Perhaps it was Alberto De Agostini, one of the first explorers to summit a number of the region’s many peaks in the early 20th century, who best described the wonder of Torres del Paine: «The Paine massif is unrivalled. . . In its colors and form it is without doubt one of the most fantastic and spectacular sights that human imagination can conceive.»
Perennially featured in lists of the planet’s most beautiful national parks, each year Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in Chilean Patagonia attracts thousands of visitors from all walks of life. For the high-end traveller, a new lodge opening in 2013 will offer the opportunity to gaze across the park’s wild expanses from the comfort of luxury villas.
Awasi Patagonia, the new project from Spanish hotelier Ana Sainz de Vicuña, will consist of 12 villas all with views of the northern faces of the stunning jagged towers of Cordillera del Paine. Similarly to Awasi Atacama, the lodge will offer a completely tailor-made experience for visitors.
“Our establishments are less hotels and more in the style of the classic African premium safari lodge,” Matías de Cristóbal, Awasi’s director general, told This is Chile. “Our guests will stay in villas that are secluded from one another, they will have their own guides, and will be able to choose whatever excursions they want to do. They will not have to compromise for the sake of a group.”
Before arriving at the lodge, guests will fill out a questionnaire stating what they want from their stay, including food preferences and type of excursions.
“We can cater to a couple on a romantic stay who want to go horseback riding at sunset, or adventurers who want to tackle some of the park’s tougher hikes,” de Cristóbal explained.
The lodge will be located in a private reserve on the border of the national park, and excursions are available on the lodge’s land as well as in the park itself. The lodge will have one double villa and 11 single villas, accommodating 26 guests in total, as well as a restaurant and a common area.
Part of the Relais & Chateaux luxury hotel and restaurant fellowship, Awasi Patagonia is three months into construction and is projected to receive its first guests in September or October 2013. Rates will be in the region of US$850 (CLP400,000) per person, per night. A flight from Santiago to Punta Arenas takes just over four hours, with a stopover in Puerto Montt.
