She has long been a legend, her voice reaching far beyond the ears of her native land to bring the culture, history and stories of Chile to the world. But in 2011, with the launch of an acclaimed biopic of her life and art that could take Chile to the Oscars, Violeta Parra’s star has risen again.

Now, in November, Chileans and Violeta fans will have the chance to relive her voice and music as a group of well-known Chilean musicians gather to give a series of three free concerts, celebrating “the year of Violeta.”

The concerts will be held on November 16, 18 and 19 in Santiago, Iquique and then Antofagasta in open public spaces in each of the cities: Santiago’s Plaza de Armas, the forecourt of the Iquique Municipal Theater, and the Huanchaca Ruins in Antofagasta.

Some of the biggest names in Chilean rock and pop will be joining the Symphonic Orchestra of Chile at the events, including Ana Tijoux and Francisca Valenzuela, who played to international crowds at the first ever Lollapalooza Chile music festival. Alongside them will be iconic rock group Inti Illimani and Javiera Parra, Violeta’s granddaughter, with her band Javiera y Los Imposibles.

“For many years, we have been working to spread the word about one of Chile’s most important artists: Violeta Parra,” says María Olivia Recart, External Affairs Vice President of BHP Billiton, the company organizing the concerts.

“She recaptured our national identity, traveling through villages and discovering our oral history, and her music – more relevant every day – is the ultimate reflection of this. Violeta is part of our country’s artistic heritage.”

The shows will lead the audience through 25 of Violeta’s most famous songs, from her earliest work to her latest compositions.

Tickets are free and there are limited numbers available, restricted to four per person. They can be collected at stands in each of the three cities close to the date of the concert.

In Santiago, from November 9, there will be a ticket stand in Plaza de Armas between 11am and 8pm. In Iquique, tickets are available from November 14 at the BHP Billiton Pampa Norte office, 1st floor, Avenida Esmeralda 340, between 9am and 6pm. In Antofagasta, tickets can be collected at the Municipal Theater on Sucre 433, also from November 14 and between 9am and 6pm.
