Santiago a Mil is back, Chile’s great festival of the performing arts

The XXIII version of the Santiago a Mil festival started on Sunday with the show «Queen Street» and will last until January 24.

The event that gathers theater, music, cinema and dance began on January 3 with a street performance featuring 3 of the most famous characters of William Shakespeare’s work: Juliet («Romeo and Juliet»), Cordelia («King Lear») and Ophelia («Hamlet»). Celebrating the 400 demise anniversary of the legendary English playwright and poet, two of his best-known works will be represented in Santiago: «A Midsummer Night’s Dream» and «Romeo and Juliet».

Santiago a Mil is being held in January since 1994 without interruptions, with works in conventional theatres, parks and streets of the Chilean capital. The main purpose of this event is to bring the performing arts closer to the people, who will enjoy dozens of works both in Santiago and in other regions.

Santiago a Mil will offer 66 shows until January 24, 35 from Chile and 31 foreign works, said the Executive Director of Fundación Teatro a Mil, Carmen Romero, also adding that dance, theatre, music, circus, photography and carnivals will flood the city of Santiago and many others from Chile’s north and south.

«It also offers city performances in the regions of Arica, Tarapacá, Antofagasta, Valparaíso, O’Higgins, Maule and Bío-Bío (…). A program designed for the community has been designed, which transforms public space into a place of inclusive coexistence», Romero pointed out.
