With the aim of implementing a virtual teaching platform, representatives from the Schools of Psychology that are members of the Consortium of State Universities (CUE – Consorcio de Universidades del Estado) met on the campus of the Faculty of Humanities at the Universidad de Santiago de Chile.

The project seeks to create a common profile of the graduate students from the seven universities that are part of the CUE, made up of the Schools of Psychology of Universidad de Chile, Universidad de La Frontera, Universidad de La Serena, Universidad de Valparaíso, Universidad de Talca, Universidad de Tarapacá and Universidad de Santiago de Chile.

Another of the objectives of the program is to use technology to bring together students and academics from different universities, thus giving rise to more active and autonomous professionals. Demonstrations at a distance, evaluations via internet and access to different virtual libraries will also be developed.

The initiative also contemplates the implementation of virtual classrooms in each of the universities, which will allow students to attend classes either in person or virtually.

The application of virtual technologies to improve the quality of education in the country is a trend that is growing on a daily basis. Recently, a group of university researchers developed a virtual program that seeks to improve the reading skills of secondary school students in municipal schools.

Other higher-education institutions such as the Universidad de los Lagoshave implemented similar systems, but at an international level. Together with the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira in Colombia and Missouri State University in the U.S., they are working to create joint virtual spaces that will facilitate the learning of similar subjects.

This new virtual platform will be implemented by mid-2010 at the latest.
