The fifth version of the Future Conference will take place in Chile from January 19 to 24. This event is a humanistic and scientific encounter of great proportions that addresses topics that society will face in the future. The event is open to the public and was organized by the Senate -through its Challenges of the Future Commission- and the Government of Chile, in partnership with institutions such as the Academy of Sciences, Corfo, embassies and Chilean universities.

On this occasion, the Future Congress contemplates innovations in relation to the previous editions. One of the main purposes of the 2016 version is to reach all of Chile and the world with a live bilingual broadcast. This will be transmitted for free via streaming, and can be watched on the official website, the Senate’s official channel, or from a mobile application that will be launched soon. At the same time, in an decentralization effort, scientists will not only give their lectures in Santiago, but will also give them in other cities such as Antofagasta, Valparaíso, Valdivia and Punta Arenas.

At the event’s launch, the President of the Senate, Patricio Walker, said that “sometimes we need to look up, leaving behind the issues of contingency to think big”. Walker noted that the organization, as in previous years, seeks to fill the halls: “We are going to discuss high level issues, calling on thousands of young people, thousands of scientists and thousands of Chileans,” he stressed.

The fifth Future Congress will be developed in a format of keynote speeches, workshops and conferences in a TED style, discussing major themes such as artificial intelligence, energy and climate change, astronomy, medicine, social connectivity, 21st Century education and 2.0 Society. In particular, one of the main topics will be Astrobiology; a science that combines disciplines such as astrophysics, biology and geology to determine the origin, existence and presence of life in the universe.
