According to the Times Higher Education – QS World University Rankings for the best 500 universities around the world, two Chilean universities are among the top 10 in Latin America.
Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile came in fourth place, while Universidad de Chile ranked seventh in the Latin American classification headed by Universidad Autónoma de México, followed by Universidad de Sao Paulo in Brazil, and Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina in third place.
The study stated that Universidad Católica de Chile (UC) “has been a leader in research and in academic programs that have had considerable influence in the country’s cultural and scientific development”. It also referred to the University’s various inventions in the fields of chemistry, engineering and medicine. The ranking – headed by Harvard University for the second consecutive year – placed Universidad Católica in number 241.
Universidad de Chile, in turn, was ranked in number 320. “It is one of the oldest universities in the Americas and one of the largest and most prestigious in Chile” said the study.
The ranking considers academic institutions in over 20 countries around the world. The United States dominates the list with 42 universities, followed by Europe with 36 and Asia Pacific with 22.
