Universidad de Chile

The Universidad de Chile, founded in 1842, is the country’s oldest national and public Institution. It has forged the Republic and 20 of Chile’s 31 Presidents as well as 151 National Prizes and our Nobel Prize laureates Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda have been educated in its classrooms.


The Shanghai Jiao Tong rankings placed Universidad de Chile among the best 500 universities worldwide, and the World University Ranking, prepared by Times Higher Education, situated it within the 320 top  universities. Over the past five years it concentrates 31% of the total ISI publications generated by the members of the Rectors’ Council universities. In the last decade it accounted for an average of 29% of allocations in regular FONDECYT research projects; three of the country’s five Millennium Institutes abroad and 10 of the 27 national Millennium Nuclei.

Academic programs

Undergraduate: Enrollment amounts to 24,235 undergraduate students. It is organized into 14 faculties, 4 institutes and a clinical hospital. It offers undergraduate programs in all areas of knowledge: Architecture; Urban Planning; Arts; Health Sciences; Chemistry; Pharmacy; Earth Sciences and Astronomy; Engineering; Biotechnology; Basic and Natural Sciences; Economics and Business; Law; Social Sciences; Communication; Humanities; Education; Political Science; International Studies; Geography; Agriculture; Forestry Sciences; Veterinary Medicine; and Food Technology. The Universidad de Chile offers 85 careers, and 18 degree programs.

Postgraduate: Consists of approximately 6,000 graduate students. It offers 36 doctoral programs, 119 Master’s Programs and 144 Postgraduate and professional specialization programs. It currently accounts for 30% of the country’s graduates. Doctoral program areas: Agricultural and Marine Sciences; Natural Science and Mathematics; Social Sciences; Law; Economics and Business; Humanities; Health and Technology.
