For decades, Viña del Mar has been one of Chile’s top attractions, and last month an official survey confirmed what most locals already suspected: the garden city is considered by Chileans the best place to live in the South American nation.
But not wanting to rest on its laurels, Viña del Mar has just launched a packed summer holiday program with an impressive list of cultural, artistic and sporting events to keep everyone entertained. If you haven’t been there already, summer is shaping up as a great time to visit this Chilean gem.
Headlining the city’s 2011-2012 program will be internationally renowned DJ and music producer David Guetta, and the return of the hugely popular VTR Open tennis tournament.
Sports lovers will also be able to share in the carnival atmosphere of Seven a Side, the largest rugby sevens competition in South America, featuring Los Pumas from Argentina and the Chilean Los Condores.
On the cultural front, Viña del Mar is gearing up for the acclaimed International Song Festival, featuring Marc Anthony along with an international craft fair and a gigantic sand castle competition on the city’s beaches.
“We have prepared a diverse and entertaining program for the whole family that will complement the city’s natural assets, which will also be open to all locals and tourists,” the city’s mayor, Virginia Reginato, told Pura Noticia.
“We will continue to be the best tourist destination [in Chile] because we have the most attractive summer program and we also have the advantage of being chosen as the host city for several major events.”
For those looking for some genuine Chilean entertainment, the top attractions in Viña del Mar this summer are all about laughs. First up will be a big top show starring local comedian, Ernesto Belloni, followed by a series of live performances from fellow comic, Cristián Henríquez.
Capping off the summer in Chile’s most popular coastal city will be a theatrical adaptation of Jonathan Swift’s literary classic, Gulliver’s Travels, which will be held in the massive amphitheater in the Quinta Vergara park.
